One of the men struck by a pickup this morning on the Westside has died, police said.

Nicholas Malott, 22, Indianapolis, was transported to IU Methodist Hospital in critical condition after the accident but later died of his injuries. Malott’s brother, 24-year-old Dusty Shiler, Indianapolis, was taken to the hospital in serious condition was released tonight.

The accident occurred around  5:45 a.m. near the intersection of Washington Street and Bridgeport Road. Malott and his brother were pushing a disabled vehicle to a nearby gas station when they were struck, said Kendale Adams, spokesman for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. Both are thought to have been wearing reflective vests, he said, and “the disabled vehicle’s emergency flashers were operational at the time of the collision.”

The pickup driver was identified as Indianapolis resident Timothy Childers, Adams said.

Investigators did not observe any “obvious signs of impairment” from the driver, Adams said, but he was expected to undergo a blood test for illegal intoxicants as a matter of standard procedure.
