Stay Safe on the Roads in the New Year

December 28, 2016 | Car Accidents

With the holidays behind us, most people are now looking forward to starting a new year and setting new goals. One of those goals should be to keep yourself and your family as safe as possible every time you leave the house – including when you are driving. The following are some examples of tips to stay safe on the roads in 2017:

  • -Get a Tune-up – Keeping your car well-maintained can help prevent parts such as brakes and tires from malfunctioning, which in turn prevents accidents. The new year is always a good time to have a trusted mechanic inspect your vehicle and address any possible issues.
  • -Check for Recalls – Thousands of vehicles are recalled every year for a variety of potentially dangerous and defective auto parts. During the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it is all too easy to miss a notice of a recall in the mail, so it is a good idea to take a minute and search the recall database provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to see if your vehicle is the subject of any type of recall.
  • -Follow the Law – Make sure that you are aware of any changes to driving laws in Indiana and in your locality, including any distracted driving-related regulations. Every time you get behind the wheel, ensure that you follow all traffic rules so that you drive as safely as possible.
  • -Stay Aware – When you are driving, make sure you are not distracted or fatigued so that you can dedicate full focus to the road ahead of you. Staying aware of all of the traffic around you is essential for safe driving, though many people fail to do so because they are constantly multitasking. Try to make an effort in 2017 to remain vigilant while driving.

Even if you take all of the necessary steps to drive safely this year, you cannot control the actions of other drivers. If someone else crashes into your car and injures you, you have the right to hold them liable for their negligent driving.
